Never give up: The Ivanize Experience

I produced a brief documentary on Ivan Humphries, well known Detroit
Hair Stylist. He briefly talks about his experience in the hair industry
and how he was able to finally live his dream of opening up his own
hair school.

Ivan talks about how life can sometimes hit us hard
but the key to life is not giving up. Go for what you want despite what
others may think and despite what it takes to get to where you want to
be.

He is a known stylist in his era and is known for doing different celebrity's hair, such as Aretha Franklin.

Wayne State Warriors take on Lawrence Tech Blue Devils

Wayne State Warrior Kristen Long, # 11, uses her defensive techniques on Blue Devils team player number 21 from making a score.
This photo assignment was quite an experience for me. It was a little tough for me because I had problems trying to capture the moments while in mid action.
I had to play around with my different shutter speeds, F-Stop and ISO settings in order for me to capture a photo that was not blurry.
This was a good experience for me because it helped me to get used  to using different settings. It was also a great game, the Wayne State Warrior won against the Blue Devils, 82-72.

Braid My Hair!

My portraiture assignment was taken at Salon Ivanize, a local hair salon in Detroit, Michigan. This assignment was a little tougher than I expected. When taking the headshot, I had to take a few pictures to try to accomplish my goal for the assignment. In order to get a close to perfect headshot I needed to make sure the background was clear and no distractions. This was sort of hard because of all of the tools and space inside the hair salon. So I decided to take the head shots in front of a plain white wall, drawing attention to only her face and not the background. The environmental portraiture was a little difficult for me because I captured pictures of the stylist doing hair and it was difficult trying to capture the right image with the stylist and client both moving around a lot. But overall this was a great experience for me.

The First Amendment: One of the Best Rights Given to Us

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the government for a redress of grievances.

The First Amendment is one of the best rights given to us by the Constitution. 1A gives us freedom of speech, press, religion, assembly and petition. This is very important to journalist because of the two; freedom of press and freedom of speech. This Amendment protects journalists and gives them the right to say what they want and publish whatever they feel the need to publish. However, it must be truth behind it. The citizens have the right to know what is going on around them and journalists and the press are the ones they rely on to deliver the information.

There are some exceptions with the First Amendment, that I do agree with. As a collegiate photojournalists student, I am free to print expressions and say how I feel, however I cannot print libel, threatening or disruptive content. Also whenever publishing material it must be true, if material is published knowing that it is false information, journalists can later face consequences for those actions.

I have learned that there have been many occasions where police or public officials may violate The First Amendment, by trying to stop freedom of expression. Fortunately, if you know your rights, then you are protected. Some try to prevent journalists from speaking or expressing how they feel, in some cases to save themselves. But always remember you are always protected by the First Amendment, so feel free to express, publish, write, or say how you feel on any topic or matter. Use the First Amendment to the best of your ability but also make sure you have knowledge on the “do’s” and “dont’s" within The First Amendment.

Getting to know Ms.K McCoy

My name is Keisha McCoy, but many know me as K.McCoy. I like to be referred to by my last name because I feel as if it defines me and my character. I am a senior at Central Michigan University but this semester I am finishing up my undergraduate as a transfer student at Wayne State.

I am taking Digital Photojournalism this semester and I am very excited to learn new things about photography, journalism and how the two correlate with each other. There are a lot of ethics that needs to be understood as a photojournalist in order to master the skill of photojournalism and I am ready for this journey!
